CHAPTER 11

Tires screeched as Aidon pulled down an alley in the middle of downtown. His door was open, and he was halfway to the street before I could react. He hadn’t said a word to me, making the five-minute drive seem like it had lasted an eternity.

“Aidon, wait! Please. I have something I want to say to you.” I waited until he stopped. He crossed his arms over his chest and kept his back to me. I rubbed the ache in my heart. Emotion burned in my throat, making it impossible to say anything.

Finally, he turned around and glowered at me. “What do you want to tell me? How do you want to go first this time?”

I shook my head from side to side, sending tears flying off my cheeks. “Not at all. I need you to know that I might not have wanted these babies before, but I want them now. More than anything! And I never meant to put them in harm’s way! I would do anything to keep them safe, so I will stay in the car. I'll cast a protection spell.”

Aidon was in front of me, pulling me into his arms a second later. “I love you, Queenie. I’m not telling you that you have to sit things out. I know how you feel about being told what you can and can’t do. That’s not what I’m doing here. I just want you to be more careful. I thought I was going to lose you and the babies when you went out that window. I’ve never been afraid like that before in my life.” He pressed his forehead to mine and took a deep breath.

His masculine scent surrounded me, and his words eased the heartache I’d been struggling with since he had set me safely down on the sidewalk. “I appreciate you clarifying for me. Coming close to getting seriously hurt and losing the babies shook me. I know how close I came. I wouldn’t have made it without you.”

“That’s why I reacted the way I did. The darkness swallowed me whole as fear took over. I knew it was a possibility but never had it happened so fast.”

I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “I was afraid I’d lost you. I mean, I know you would never leave your kids. But raising them without you at my side would have killed me. I can’t survive you hating me.”

Aidon reared back as if I’d slapped him. “Hate you? I could never feel that way about you. I will love you forever and always. We’re in this together, Queenie, to the end. But you need to know that I can’t fight my instinct. Protecting you, and now our kids is automatic. I can’t shut it off, and I don’t want to. I can fight it to a degree, but it becomes impossible if I know you or the babies are at risk.”

“I promise to do everything in my power to keep us all safe. While I hope the cases that come our way get easier, I cannot guarantee they will.
